I have been lucky enough to be involved as an event photographer with Taste Great Southern for a few years now. It’s a series of food and wine events celebrating all the exceptional produce grown and made in the Great Southern region. There is always an unusual location or two where a feast is served to eager patrons and this year one of the more unusual feast locations was at the Avenue of Honour, Mount Clarence with the backdrop of the stunning Field of Lights installation by artist Bruce Munro.
The Avenue of Honour is a magnificent grove of eucalyptus trees planted as a memorial to local soldiers who fell in times of war. Each tree has a memorial plaque at it’s base commemorating a single soldier. The Field of Light installation by Bruce Munro is set amongst the grove - all 16,000 spheres of light representing the 41,000 troops who departed from Albany for the Great War. Knowing that so many died bought much contemplation and sombre thought. You can see why it has drawn in over 100,000 visitors since it opened in Oct 2018. It closes 27th April 2019. I would highly recommend a visit if you have not already done so (info here: www.fieldoflightalbany.com.au/ ).
We had local chefs Sally Francis (Runes Catering), Geoff Richardson (Banksia Gardens) along with Master Chef winner Adam Liaw, Paul Iskov (Fervour) and Alex Johnson (Plantagenet Wines) preparing a gastronomic delight for everyone attending. They were set up in a marquee, with minimal equipment, an amazing team and produced the most delicious canapes. I got to try the canape served in an egg shell which contained the most divine crab concoction prepared by Paul Iskov. All of this was wonderfully MC’d by the ever lovely Anna Gare and the best music playlist played by the talented local musician Rob Vermeulen.
My big challenge were the incredibly low light conditions…and not being able to try all the food served!
Here are a few of the photos I took. Check out Taste Great Southern’s website www.tastegreatsouthern.com.au/ for more info and updates for next years events.
